Zedvin-T as part of combination therapy is indicated for the treatment of HIV infection when antiretroviral therapy is warranted. Maternal-Fetal HIV Transmission:

Zedvin-T is also indicated for the prevention of maternal-fetal HIV transmission. The safety of zidovudine for the mother or foetus during the first trimester of pregnancy has not been assessed.

Zidovudine is a member of a class of compounds called dideoxynucleosides. It is a thymidine analog in which the 3'-hydroxyl -OH) group is replaced by an azido (-N[.sub.3]) group. The chemical name of zidovudine is 3'-azido-3'-deoxythymidine.
The drug has a limited spectrum of antiviral activity. It is active against human retroviruses, including HIV type 1 (HIV-1), HIV type 2 (HIV-2) and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). It is also active against many animal retroviruses, such as feline leukemia virus, Friend murine leukemia virus, Harvey murine sarcoma virus and simian T-lymphotropic virus type 3.
Zidovudine is active in vitro against many Enterobacteriaceae, but resistance develops rapidly. The drug has no activity against grampositive organisms, anaerobes, mycobacteria or fungi.

The drug is contraindicated for patients who have potentially life-threatening allergic reactions to any of the components of the formulations.
