Therapeutic Index

Each capsule (E.C. granules ) contains:

Composition:

Omeprazol..................................................................20 mg

Indications:

Ulcer, duodenal; Adenoma, multiple endocrine; Esophagitis, erosive; Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease; Mastocytosis, systemic; Ulcer, gastric; Zollinger-Ellison syndrome; Pregnancy Category C;

Description:

Omeprazole is a selective and irreversible proton pump inhibitor. Omeprazole suppresses gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of the hydrogen–potassium adenosinetriphosphatase (H +, K +-ATPase) enzyme system found at the secretory surface of parietal cells. It inhibits the final transport of hydrogen ions (via exchange with potassium ions) into the gastric lumen. Since the H +, K +-ATPase enzyme system is regarded as the acid (proton) pump of the gastric mucosa, omeprazole is known as a gastric acid pump inhibitor. The inhibitory effect is dose-related. Omeprazole inhibits both basal and stimulated acid secretion irrespective of the stimulus.

Side/Adverse Effects

Note: Gastric fundic gland polyps have occurred rarely in patients receiving omeprazole; these appear to be benign and reversible upon discontinuance of omeprazole.
Gastroduodenal carcinoids have been reported in patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome who have received long-term omeprazole therapy. These carcinoids are believed to be a manifestation of the underlying syndrome, which is known to be associated with such tumors.
Atrophic gastritis has been noted occasionally in gastric corpus biopsies from patient receiving long-term omeprazole therapy.
Overt liver disease has occurred rarely, and included hepatocellular, cholestatic, or mixed hepatitis, liver necrosis (sometimes fatal), hepatic failure (sometimes fatal), and hepatic encephalopathy.
The following side/adverse effects have been selected on the basis of their potential clinical significance (possible signs and symptoms in parentheses where appropriate)—not necessarily inclusive:
